RE: iPhone Apps for On the Road

Davydd,
Your last paragraph is exactly how I felt/feel. I liked Verizon service and was very reluctant to give it up. I do believe they have the best coverage and infrastructure. However I do not like they way they are very proprietary with their phones, i.e. downloading data and/or pictures. They want to control everything,
I still have a Verizon air card and it works wonderfully when we travel. Will have to see how my laptop with Verizon stacks up against the 3G service on the iPhone. Maybe I won't need a laptop anymore. You're right, the iPhone is like having a mini/small size computer in you hand.

RE: iPhone Apps for On the Road

Okay, you guys win. I purchased the iPhone 3G last Friday and spent the weekend using it. I absolutely love it and the price is justified. The more you use it the more you are amazed.
There are two reasons no other cell phone can touch the iPhone for me is:
1st, if you are already a Mac user, this phone is phenomenal and so easy to use. It comes with Mail & a real browser, Safari. I use MobleMe and everything is synced. It just seems right. I'm sorry, the new Blackberry, although very nice, just doesn't compare. At least for a Mac user anyway.
2nd is the Apps Store. There is so much there and what these apps can do with the iPhone is unbelievable. There has to be apps there that will fit any and all of your needs.
Thanks guys for the advice of going ahead and buying one and the best part is DW said to go ahead and buy it. Didn't even have to sell her on it. :E

RE: New iMac computer

You now have the exact setup that I have at home. 20" iMac, Cradlepoint 1000, and the USB 720 Verizon air card. Works great and you will love it.
May I suggest that you get the USB727 air card. Newer and a little better. Contact 3Gstore.com and ask for Alex. He is a forum member here and helps fellow RVer's all of the time. The 3Gstore can/will give you a package deal on the USB 727 and Cradlepoint 1000 together.
Check into the MobleMe service at Apple.com. It has a yearly charge and gives backup service, website, photos online, and more. It gives you Mac mail accounts (5 or 7) and allow it all to sync with all of your Macs. Even a laptop if/when you get one. Check it out online. It may solve a lot of the things you want and need.
Good luck,
PS: Apple will give you a discount for MobleMe when you purchase a new iMac. Don't forget to ask about.

RE: New iMac computer

I'm now sure if an air card will work with Apple's Airport router. Check with the Apple people before you buy. However, I do know that my Cradlepoint1000 works perfectly with my Mac(s).
Office for Mac (made by Microsoft) is about the same price as iWorks. If you have to deal a lot with others and businesses that use MS Office then Office for Mac is the way to go.
If you do small amounts of communicating with Office programs then I would go with iWorks. iWorks can still read and work with Office Word and Excel. This would and should be all you need. And the big plus is that iWorks really integrates nicely with all of the other Mac programs (that are in iLife; it comes installed on all Macs) so that you will experience what makes Mac so great. Compatability.

RE: iPhone Apps for On the Road

You guys are killing me. :M
I was going to buy an iPhone and then found out there is no 3G service in the whole state that I live in. I am patiently waiting for an Verizon iPhone version to come out. :E
Made the switch to Mac two years ago and now have two in the home and getting the new MacBook for Christmas. Boy the iPhone would be great to intergrate with my all of my Mac's.
Anyway, you guys just keeping telling me about everything that I am missing and I will keep on dreaming. :C

RE: Compare Hughes vs; DSL

I have owned both and the DSL is much better. As far as traveling in an RV, I prefer using an aircard. True it may not/will not work everywhere but I like it.
If you really need the Hughes for traveling in the out of the way locations, send me a PM. I have a complete Hughes 7000 system I will let go and save you a bundle.

RE: Buying online

And one other thing. Many times you will find something at an unbelievable price and if you read the all of the print you will find that it is a "refurbished" product. Something to consider.
I have a friend that will not touch a refurbished product with a ten foot pole. I buy refurbish products quit often and have not been burned yet. However I do get a little more picky with who I am dealing with in that case. Know who you are buying from. Example, buying refurbished from Apple is like buying a brand new product. But If I don't know the company, buyer beware.

RE: Buying online

1wayphoto looks to be a legit online store. However, I have not personally used them.
I would still compare their price to a few other places and do a Google on them to see if any negatives pop up.

RE: Buying online

I buy online maybe 80% of time and the reason is price. Finding large discounts (like 40%) in not unheard of. When I was young I always wanted it NOW! Now that I am older I don't mind at all waiting a couple of days to save the money.
Using a credit card online (or something like PayPal) is just as safe, or even more, as using a credit card at a local restaurant. When that person walks away front your table with your credit card in their hand, you really do not know what is happening with it.
I agree with the above poster. The online company you are dealing with is way more important than anything else. Over time I have a group of online "stores" that I deal with all of the time. If it is a new one to me, then I do a little research on them.
Compare the exact camera model number with places like JR.com, newegg.com, onecall.com, these are just a few that I know are great to deal with. I would also suggest that you Google the camera brand and model number and you will be surprise how much information you will find. Many places selling the camera (at low prices) and many reviews or the camera and the online store selling the camera.
You have to start somewhere to learn which are the good and bad online stores.
Good luck,

RE: AirCard Booster - What is it? Does it work?

Thanks jhilley. I wanted to make sure I was reading the right information on the modem info page.
Alex,
On the link provided by jhilley, it states that a dBm reading of -74 was equal to 100%. Is that 100% of data speed coming in to me? In other words, if I have -74 then I am receiving the highest download speed that the tower can send me at that time?
Also do I assume that the dBm reading of -74 is the same as a -74 RSSI reading?
I think that I am understanding this but as you can tell I am still a little confused.

Yes, the latest upgrade gives you signal strength.
How and exactly where do I find this information?
Alex?

RE: used pullrite superglide hitches

If the head is adjusted properly it should have some resistance in pivoting to the left or right. Once it makes the pivot it should slide freely.
Also you should be able to us a stick or something (NOT your fingers) to "trip" the cam to make the jaws slide shut. Once that is done the release handle should pull freely.
I hope this helps and I don't know how else to explain it.

RE: Satellite TV, do you run yours off of batteries?

I have two 6-Volt batteries running a 750 Watt inverter (more than needed) that is running an LCD TV and a dual tuner HD DVR (HR21) and can watch TV for several hours at night. Have not ran out of power while watching. Of course I do not stay up all night watching TV. Maybe 3 to 5 hours.
Needless to say, I must recharge batteries in the morning.

RE: DirecTV DVR to DVR

What Larry stated above is possible. The HR20 & HR21 both allow an external hard drive to be connected to the DVR. So the hard drive (with TV shows and movies) could then be connected to any computer and then viewed using whatever media viewer program that is on the computer. If this is indeed true, you should be able to burn a show/movie to a DVD.
One question is, will you be able to find the file that you want to view. I would assume that it is an Mpeg 2 or 4 recording. Not sure if the computer's operating system can find it and transfer it. I believe TiVos and DirecTV DVRs are based upon a Linux OS. It would be very interesting for someone to try this and report back.

RE: DirecTV DVR to DVR

The only way I have found to get a DVD burned from something stored on my DVR is to burn it to a DVD Player/Recorder. The problem with this is first it is burned at real time. In other words, a one hours show will take one hour to burn. Second you cannot transfer an HD recording. It down converts to 480P in the recording process.
If you could fine the proper cable connections to your computer and with a proper program you "MAY" be able to do this. Even in HD. However, I still do not believe that you will be able to transfer data from the DVR hard drive straight to your computer's hard drive. It would probably still be a real time transfer and would take an hour for an hour recording.
This is only my opinion. I could be totally wrong on this.

Burn in issue used to be a problem with all plasmas. No as much now with the newer ones. It still can happen but not as likely.
LCDs are not effected by the the burn in issue.
